1.Bastardo is a small town in the Italian province of Perugia, in central Umbria, in the valley of a river called Torrente Puglia. The town developed around an inn in the 17th or 18th centuries, and was formerly known as Osteria del Bastardo, which translates as 'Bastard's Inn'. It has been suggested that the inn was given this name by the locals because it was built and run by someone from outside the local area, who consequently was regarded with some disdain.

2. Tom Mangan explains: '“Bumpass Hell” is a collection of geothermic features at Lassen Volcanic National Park in nothern California named after an explorer named Kendall Bumpass, who found the features in the mid-1860s and he fell through the brittle earth into a near-boiling spring below. The scalding was so severe that he lost a leg. One specific feature of the area is impossible to miss: a rotten-egg odor coming up from the ground that really does smell like hell.':
